Luminous Lightshaft - Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona

I look for subjects with strong graphic elements, unusual light and/or artistic details. The "slot" canyons of the desert southwest are this photographer's dream. The light inside the canyon changes constantly as the sun passes over. On the day I made this photograph, it was windy outside. On occasion sand would fall through the slot overhead. Where the sunlight strikes the falling sand, a lightshaft would appear fleetingly. I was making long exposures to pick up all the nuances of color in the red sandstone walls. A big challenge was to photograph the lightshaft and keep the falling sand from landing on the camera during the exposure!
